Second Saturday Education + Culture Network (dba Second Saturday Network) is a local grassroots nonprofit created by dedicated educators working closely with parents and youth workers to promote African cultural awareness and an informed appreciation of Black heritage experience. We continue the work of a project called Second Saturday School that began in the early 1990s with the intention of helping Black kids steer clear of the criminal justice system. For the past sixteen years we’ve been providing informational presentations on education and culture; conducting university community engagement events for African heritage families; and creating educational travel experiences for young people and their families. During those years we have been able to touch the lives of hundreds of students and have so far seen dozens complete their educations and go on to join the ranks of service professionals. We are an all-volunteer organization that relies mainly on donor support to make our events and activities available to all who attend without charge. Our intention is to represent positive images of community members supporting developmental success not only for African heritage youth but also for other young people who may be educationally under-resourced.
